How does grading work at NIT Jalandhar?

NIT Jalandhar follows a 10-point grading system.

GradeGrade PointsDescription
S10Outstanding
A9Excellent
B8Very Good
C7Good
D6Average
E5Marginal Pass
U-Fail
I-Incomplete
W-Withdrawn

Recommended Cutoffs

GradeTypical Marks
S90+
A80+
B70+
C60+
D50+
E40+

However, these are only recommended cutoffs.

NITJ also uses relative grading in many courses. If a course has a large number of students, grade boundaries may be adjusted based on overall class performance and standard deviation.

A typical relative grading distribution may roughly look like this:

Approx. Batch PercentileGradeGrade Points
Top ~5%S10
Next ~15–20%A9
Next ~20–25%B8
Next ~20–25%C7
Next ~15–20%D6
Remaining Passing StudentsE5

This means:

  • In a difficult course, an S grade might be awarded at 75–80 marks.
  • An A grade could sometimes be awarded around 70–75 marks.
  • In easier courses, the cutoffs may be much higher.

A common first-year example is programming-related courses, where strict checking and tougher papers can lead to lower absolute scores but relatively higher grades.

The only fixed rule is that the minimum marks required to pass a course is generally 40.

How is SGPA calculated?

Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is calculated using the following formula:

SGPA =
Σ(Course Credits × Grade Points)
Σ(Course Credits)

Example

CourseCreditsGradeGrade Points
Mathematics4A9
Physics4B8
Programming3S10
Workshop2A9

Calculation:

SGPA =
(4 × 9) + (4 × 8) + (3 × 10) + (2 × 9)
4 + 4 + 3 + 2
SGPA =
36 + 32 + 30 + 18
13
SGPA = 116 ÷ 13 = 8.92

How is CGPA calculated?

CGPA is the cumulative average across all completed semesters.

CGPA =
Σ(Credits × Grade Points across all semesters)
Σ(Total Credits)

Example

SemesterCreditsSGPA
Sem 1228.50
Sem 2249.00

Calculation:

CGPA =
(22 × 8.5) + (24 × 9.0)
22 + 24
CGPA =
187 + 216
46
CGPA = 403 ÷ 46 = 8.76
